Looking at Stroke

Designing Empathy

Looking at Stroke was developed in collaboration with Stroke Hub Wales to help young people understand stroke-related visual impairments and make healthier lifestyle choices to reduce their risk. Drawing on my experience leading youth workshops, I designed an educational pack for schools that included simulation glasses, allowing students to experience different types of stroke-related sight loss first-hand.

The campaign’s visual identity used a bold, shape-led system to represent common forms of visual field loss. These shapes were used to partially obscure content across the materials, creating a sense of disorientation and helping students empathise with the challenges stroke survivors face.

The project was recognised with a Silver Creative Conscience Award for its social impact and has been featured at national design and healthcare events.

We were blown away by the creativity and sensitivity behind this project.
It’s not easy to make medical concepts accessible—let alone emotionally resonant—but this work did both brilliantly. The simulation tools and visual identity brought an entirely new level of understanding to young audiences.
